- We received the prestigious title of “The best youth orchestra in the world” at the World Youth Orchestra in Tokyo. (1996)
- Some of Canada’s best-known orchestral talent got their start in the National Youth Orchestra.
- Our alumni make up approximately one-third of Canada's professional orchestral musicians.
- We receive an average of 500 applications from across Canada for 100 orchestra positions.
- We hold auditions across the county in search of our next orchestral talent. This gives all youth – regardless of geographical or economic circumstance the opportunity to audition to be a member of the NYOC.
- As of 2006, NYOC tuition was eliminated, which means our young musicians no longer need to struggle to cover the costs of the training session.
- Our training session runs for four weeks and offers more hours of training in orchestral playing in one summer than many universities offer in a year.
- The NYOC‘s faculty members come from prominent orchestras throughout Europe and North America.
- The NYOC has been training young people since 1960 – we will celebrate our 50th birthday in 2010. The age range of NYOC is 14-28.
- Interestingly, music students have the highest admission rates to medical school, and many musicians go on to careers in medicine, law or academia.
- NYOC is unique among musical groups in that we take a holistic approach to musical training. In addition to our instrument training sessions, we provide our students with education on life as musician. Here are some of the topics we cover:
- Life as a professional Musician
- Finding additional work outside of your orchestra
- Injury prevention and body maintenance
- Team building, vocal awareness.
- Repertoire analysis classes
- Orchestral etiquette
